Neidell gets 100th career win

The Lady Toppers wrapped up their first weekend of conference road games with a 1-0 overtime win over Troy.

The win gave coach Jason Neidell his 100th career win in just his ninth season with the Lady Toppers.

The Lady Toppers (8-3-1) outshot the Lady Trojans (6-5-1) 20-5, and Neidell said his team did a good job of controlling possession the entire game.

The Lady Toppers are now 3-1 in Sun Belt Conference play.

They play at home against Arkansas-Little Rock at 6 p.m. on Friday and Arkansas at 1 p.m. on Sunday.

Check tomorrow’s Herald for more on Neidell’s accomplishment.

Three Western athletes honored by Sun Belt

Senior midfielder Kellie Walker was named the Sun Belt Conference player of the week on Tuesday.

Walker, who had a goal and an assist in Sunday’s 4-1 win over previously-unbeated Marshall, was named the offensive most valuable player at last weekend’s University of Kentucky Tournament.

This is the first career player of the week award for Walker, who holds third place in career assists and fourth in career goals at Western.

The Sun Belt also named senior cross country athletes Janet Jesang and Patrick Cheptoek as women’s and men’s performer of the week, respectively.

At Saturday’s Old Timers Classic at Kereiakes Park, Jesang took the women’s 5,000-meter race in a course-record 17 minutes, 7 seconds.

Cheptoek took the men’s five-mile race in 24 minutes, 24 seconds, the 25th man to ever break 25 minutes on the course.
