Western 7, North Texas 7 (10:57 first quarter)

Sophomore receiver Derrius Brooks answered the North Texas touchdown with an 81-yard kickoff return. Sophomore running back Bobby Rainey scored a play later from six yards out to tie the game early.

  • It will be interesting to watch the Toppers’ defensive front as the game progresses. Junior linebacker Chris Bullard played down on the first drive, throwing more of a 4-3 look at North Texas rather than the customary 3-4.

Gaebler out, Rainey set to start on Saturday

Coach David Elson announced Thursday that senior wide receiver Jake Gaebler will not play in this week’s game against Central Arkansas.

Gaebler fought a sore hamstring throughout camp and pulled it again recently. Elson said he expects sophomore Derrius Brooks and freshman Anthony Sheppard to step up and develop the receiving corps in the absence of the unit’s lone senior.

“I think big picture, it definitely helps develop your depth and gets some questions answered that maybe otherwise would not get answered,” Elson said about the loss of Gaebler.

Taking Gaebler’s place on punt returns will be sophomore running back Bobby Rainey, who will also slide into the no. 1 spot at running back ahead of senior back Tyrell Hayden. Rainey rushed for 56 yards on eight attempts against South Florida.

USF-WKU: Second quarter recap

  • USF overcame an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty three yards from the goal line to reach the end zone two plays later on an over-the-shoulder connection from senior quarterback Matt Grothe to senior receiver Theo Wilson to give the Bulls a 14-3 lead halfway into the quarter.
  • Western made it to USF’s 34-yard line on a 17-yard rush by sophomore wide receiver Derrius Brooks, but senior quarterback Brandon Smith threw his first interception of the season into the end zone a play later.
  • After senior linebacker Taurean Smith snagged a Grothe interception, the Toppers made it to USF’s 14-yard line before the drive stalled. Tinius connected on a 31-yard field goal, his second of the night and his career.
  • USF senior kicker Delbert Alvarodo missed a 49-yard field goal to end the half.
  • On that drive, Grothe surpassed former West Virginia quarterback Pat White as the Big East Conference’s career leader in total offensive yards. Grothe, who needed 101 yards to set the record, has 10,584 for his career as of halftime.
