The Toppers have had things go their way all season, but at least for one weekend, they didn’t.
Florida Atlantic won two games on Saturday to complete a three-game sweep of Western (27-12, 9-6 Sun Belt Conference) losers in five of its last six games.
The first game of Saturday’s doubleheader ended with a walk-off hit for the Owls, who won 5-4 in the 10th inning. Sophomore Rye Davis pitched 4.2 innings in relief but gave up the loss for the second time in the week.
Western got off to a fast start in the second game, leading 5-0 in the third inning. Freshman designated hitter Ryan Huck had the big hit with a three-run home run in the first inning.
Florida Atlantic then came back in the third inning to score six runs off of freshman Tanner Perkins. The lead changed two more times, with the Owls taking a 9-7 lead after the fifth as they went on to win 9-8.
Western will try to avenge its losses against Kentucky at the Bowling Green Ballpark on Tuesday before facing Louisville Wednesday.
