The Toppers’ pounding of Austin Peay began on the game’s first pitch.
Senior second baseman Matt Payton hit pitch No. 1 to deep right-center field –homering as the Tops’ lead-off batter — as Western went on to win, 14-7.
Sophomore third baseman Casey Dykes and junior catcher Matt Rice also homered in the game. Senior first baseman Jake Wells contributed three hits and four RBI.
The Toppers scored all 14 of their runs in the first five innings and were up by as many as 13 before the Governors had a late surge in the last four innings to bring them to within seven runs.
Western has now scored 10 or more runs in 17 of their 35 games this season.
Freshman Andrew Zimmerman made his first career start and pitched two scoreless innings. Sophomore Ross Hammonds received the win as he scattered just a single hit in his 2.2 innings of work.
The Toppers will be back at 6 p.m. Wednesday when they face No. 13 Louisville Denes Field.
