Defense continued to make a statement to Head Coach Willie Taggart during Thursday morning football’s practice — how it communicates, how its adjusting to a new system, and especially the energy surrounding the whole unit.
“I saw defense have a lot of energy again,” Taggart said. “The guys are really flying around, having a lot of juice out there. It’s contagious for me. I was getting excited.”
Taggart pointed out defensive ends Jared Clendenin and Bo Adebayo as leaders up front, linebacker Thomas Majors from the second line and cornerback Avery Hibbitt out of the secondary.
But while he’s often critical of the offense, Taggart said his role as offensive coordinator could be the reason why.
“That’s a big part of it,” Taggart said. “I come here to talk to you guys and go watch film and think, ‘Oh, it’s not as bad as I thought it was.’ I just want it to go right all the time, and I’ve got to keep reminding myself that it doesn’t go right all the time.
“I want those guys to come out every single play and be perfect, and that’s part of it — that I’m over there.”
The Toppers have now run through 10 spring practices and have five left, including the Spring Game on April 17.
