The Toppers strapped their full set of pads on today for their third practice of the spring.
Head Coach Willie Taggart said he was happy to finally see the team in pads.
“A lot of guys turn it down when they put on pads, and we look for those guys,” he said. “We don’t want those guys. We want guys who want to play football.”
Taggart said he wasn’t very impressed by the offense but liked what he saw out of his defense.
But the team is still focusing on discipline and fundamentals — something Taggart said the team would focus on all spring.
“Our guys are so undisciplined right now,” he said. “We’re going to work at getting that. Right now we’re not where we need to be from a disciplined standpoint.”
Taggart also said the team is adjusting well to the new offense and isn’t having much trouble lining up, which is something he thought would confuse them in a multiple-formation offense.
“I thought that was going to be the most challenging part of it all,” he said. “We still need to execute though. If they could execute more, I’d be a lot happier. Guys are where they’re supposed to be — they’re just dropping the ball.”
Although there may have been some negatives on the offensive side in practice today, Taggart joked that things seem to look a little better after he watches the recording of practice.
The Toppers will be back on the field for practice on Saturday at 11:40 a.m.
