The Western football team will start spring practice this Tuesday without seven members of the 2009 team.
Sophomore safety Trent Calhoun, junior corner back Dexter Taylor, junior offensive lineman Jacob McClaurin, redshirt freshman wide receiver Anthony Sheppard, junior linebacker Darius Boughman, redshirt freshman quarterback James Bauer and junior defensive back Erik Jones are no longer with the team, according to media relations.
That adds on to a request to transfer by sophomore offensive lineman Shelley Anthony.
Head Coach Willie Taggart said he’d rather only keep the players that want to be at Western under a new, “tough” coaching staff.
“A couple guys decided this wasn’t what they wanted,” Taggart said. “They decided to go somewhere else. Other than that, the guys that are on our team now are guys that want to be here.
Leaving “The Chase,” Taggart’s version of daily workouts leading up to spring practice, the first-year coach said he doesn’t expect anyone else to leave the program.
“If I had to predict, I wouldn’t predict anyone else leaving,” he said. “The guys that we have here now worked hard to get to where there at right now. I just can’t see anyone in the right frame of mind just leave.”
