After a routing New Orleans on Friday, it took a late rally for Western to take another victory on Saturday night.
The Toppers (11-4, 2-0 Sun Belt Conference) scored three runs in the ninth inning as they came from behind to beat the Privateers, 7-6, Saturday afternoon.
Sophomore center fielder Kes Carter hit a homerun with two outs in the ninth to cut the lead to one. Two batters later, freshman catcher Ryan Huck singled in sophomore shortstop Logan Robbins, and sophomore third baseman Casey Dykes drove him in on the next play to win the game.
Sophomore Ross Hammonds pitched a scoreless eighth inning to get the win, while sophomore Rye Davis retired the side in the bottom of the ninth inning in order to earn his third save of the year.
Freshman Tanner Perkins worked 4.1 innings and gave up six runs, three of them earned. Six relievers shut out the Privateers the rest of the game.
Senior Matt Payton played his first game at shortstop since May 9, 2009, and he had a hit and two RBI, extending his hitting streak to 13 games.
Western will face New Orleans again at 1 p.m. Sunday with senior Shane Cameron taking the mound.
