Western benefited from five Texas A&M errors as it defeated the Aggies 5-1 Friday night in its opening game of the QTI Baylor Classic.
Senior pitcher Matt Ridings bounced back from his rough opening day start to get the win for the Toppers (3-1). He pitched six innings, only giving up one run.
Senior Bart Carter and sophomore Rye Davis pitched the last three innings and did not allow any runs.
Western scored four runs in the fourth inning, all unearned, to pull ahead of the No. 29-ranked Aggies (3-2).
The Toppers had only six hits on the night, with sophomore left fielder Jared Andreoli picking up two of them. Senior second baseman Matt Payton had one of the Toppers’ two RBI, while junior designated hitter Kori Petri brought home a runner in his first game of the year.
Western faces Texas St. at 5 p.m. Saturday.
