USA coach impressed by Diddle Arena crowd

The Lady Toppers  drew 1,773 fans on Wednesday night – their third-largest home crowd of the season – and the fans made their presence known.

With a majority of the crowd decked out in pink as part of Western’s Pink Zone promotion for breast cancer awareness, the Lady Topper faithful saw Western hold off South Alabama for a 67-61 win on Senior Night.

USA Head Coach Rick Pietri said the crowd wasn’t the sole reason for the Jaguars’ loss, but it was definitely a factor.

“Let’s face it – today in women’s basketball, we don’t play in front of crowds like this typically. It’s just a fact,” Pietri said. “It’s what makes Diddle a special situation, because they’ve got very good fan support here. I don’t know if our kids were intimidated by the number – I’m speculating.”
