Senior co-captain Shannon Smith said the Lady Toppers beat themselves today.
Western (1-2) fell in its final game of the South Alabama Mardi Gras Tournament to SIU-Edwardsville (1-2), losing 1-0 today.
“SIUE didn’t do anything special to pull out the win,” Smith said. “We didn’t make the adjustments we needed to make offensively and left too many runners on base.”
Smith and junior Brittney Perry contributed one hit each to the Lady Toppers’ bare two hit, seven-inning game.
In the fifth inning, Western gave up the game’s first and only run after allowing SIUE’s Megan Murphy two hits.
Sophomore pitcher Dana Nathanson, who gave up five hits in the game, said the Lady Tops still showed the nerves they revealed in their first loss to Lipscomb on Saturday.
“We couldn’t seem to calm down enough at the plate to get the job done,” Nathanson said. “I think we could have won that game if we could string a few hits together.”
Nathanson said the team will work to settle their jitters before they travel to San Diego, Calif., on Friday.
“I’m confident that we will take this weekend, learn from it and come out busting at the seams next weekend,” Nathanson said.
