Western-LSU: Pregame notes

Western (1-0) and LSU (2-0) tip at 7 p.m. CT tonight in the Preseason NIT’s South Region Final.

The winner spends Thanksgiving in New York — the loser plays a pair of consolation games instead.

LSU advanced to tonight’s second round with a 56-45 win over Indiana State on Monday.

Sophomore forward Storm Warren led all scorers against the Sycamores with 14 points, but senior forward Tasmin Mitchell is the player to watch. Mitchell averaged 16 points and 7 rebounds last season, when LSU lost in the second round of the NCAA Tournament to eventual champion North Carolina.

The Toppers and Tigers have met only once before, in January of 1987. LSU won 67-62.

Side note: Senior guard A.J. Slaughter won the Sun Belt Conference’s first Player of the Week Award. Slaughter scored 30 points in Western’s regular-season opener, a 69-65 win over Wisconsin Milwaukee.
