Word out of the Arkansas-Little Rock camp is that leading scorer Steven Moore was dismissed from the team Sunday, the Arkansas Democrat Gazette reported.
This coming after Moore was suspended for UALR’s game against North Texas after walking off the court in Western’s 78-69 victory on Thursday night. Moore was the leading scorer for the West Division-leading Trojans (20-7, 13-3 Sun Belt West) at 13.6 ppg.
As far as implications for the rest of the season, this has more to do with the Sun Belt tournament than the regular season due to the fact that UALR has the West Division seemingly wrapped up, with a huge four-game lead on North Texas with two games to play. The Trojans have three other players who average double-figures in Shane Edwards (12.0), John Fowler (10.6) and Matt Mouzy (10.3), so they won’t miss Moore terribly.
It does however, add an interesting storyline to the Sun Belt Conference tournament. This team is relatively balanced, but losing a team leader like Moore this late in the season can hurt a team’s focus. Western swept the team on the season, and in both games, Moore was a non-factor, scoring five points in the 79-47 Western victory on Jan. 3 and seven points before making his own exit on Thursday. The next two games will be a good gauge to see if UALR remains one of the top contenders for the SBC tournament title.
