When senior forward Dominique Duck was asked about the Lady Toppers’ upcoming road trip to Florida Atlantic and Florida International this week, a big smile came across her face.
“We’re all excited to just get down into Florida and have fun with each other,” Duck said. “I think it’s really going to help the team bonding with this long trip late, right before Sun Belt.”
But the five-day trip is certainly more about business than it is about pleasure.
The Lady Toppers can secure a No. 3 seed in the Sun Belt Tournament and a first-round bye with a win Wednesday at FAU.
Head Coach Mary Taylor Cowles said she’s pleased that the players are looking forward to the trip – as long as they take care of business first.
“I’m glad to hear them say that, but at the same time, I think they’re also smart enough to know that we’ve got two basketball games that we need to take care of on this road swing,” Cowles said.
That’s not to say Cowles doesn’t want the Lady Toppers to have fun in Florida – because she knows they will.
“It is a lot of fun. It’s a great opportunity for them to spend some time together away from Diddle, where pretty much all you have is each other,” Cowles said. “And even though it’s a long basketball season, they do have a lot of fun together, whether it’s out at dinner, whether it’s in the hotel or finishing up a film session. They’re always picking on each other or kind of jabbing at each other.”
